Afflictions of the Yang Earth Dog (Wu Xu)
Annual Afflictions are the “sha” or unfavorable energy that cycles through every year, according to the classical Chinese Feng Shui principles, and are associated with the cardinal and ordinal directions. This cycle of energy emerges to its fullest on Feb 4 or 5, which is the beginning of the solar Chinese New Year. This year, the New Year arrives on February 4th but the emerging energy can be felt during the last quarter of the year, and by January the waning energy of the prevailing year is quite weakened and is being replaced by the emerging energy of the New Year.
The areas where the afflictions reside should not be disturbed by loud noises, construction, groundbreaking, or other rigorous activity. These areas should be kept still, quiet, and tidy. When a front door, bedroom, office/studio (where one creates wealth) are within the Palaces of the Afflictions, special precautions should be taken. Digging, construction or renovations should be avoided in these areas and new buildings should be carefully sited to avoid permanently capturing the imprint of this unfavorable energy.
The directions in which these reside during the Wu Xu year are: North, Northwest, and Southeast.
Afflictions of the North
The Three Sha or Three Killings will reside in the direction of North in 2018. In addition to this affliction, the Five Yellow Star (Lian Zhen) of tragedy, affliction, and overall poor luck visits the North in 2018. This brings with it the potential for sickness and financial disaster and particularly unfavorable overall luck. If your front door is located here, it would be best to use another door to enter the house this year. If this is not possible, take precautions to avoid activating the energy here. Loud noises and vibrations should be avoided (banging the door, chiming clock, etc). Keep the area inside and outside the door very tidy, well maintained, and peaceful. If there are any “fire” elements, such as a night light, or red, orange, or purple decor, remove them. A red front door should be painted black or blue before February. If you had planned to do any kind of renovation or construction here, either do it prior to February or postpone it until next year. When entering and exiting, use precaution to open and close the door gently and keep the energy here tranquil. Avoid constantly opening and closing the door. Do not rush in and out or otherwise bring high energy to this area. Traditionally, a 6-tube metal chime would be hung he to help balance the energy, but any significant metal will do. If you have a pendulum clock, this would be a particularly good location for it this year. However, if it has a chime, disable it for the year. If you have a dog that barks when people arrive at your door, try to keep it quiet this year. Overall, all loud noises, vibrations, and other disturbances should be avoided in the North this year. A salt water remedy may also be used here.
If your bedroom is in the north, it would be best to move to another room. Since that’s not always possible, the next best thing is to keep the room clean, uncluttered, and avoid the use of electronic equipment here such as TV’s, cell phones, electronic readers, and loud wake-up alarms. If music is played, keep it tranquil and at a low volume. Do not use this space for exercise. As mentioned above, avoid slamming doors, high activity, construction, and remove all “fire” decor and add metal decor. White, gold & silver are metal colors, and while color is more watered down as real metal, it can lend additional support when added on a large scale such as bedding, curtains, upholstery, etc. White can also be a very tranquil and calming energy in a bedroom.
Avoid sitting for prolonged periods with your back to the North (no more than 2 hours). It’s better to face North this year. If your desk faces South, it would be ideal to reposition it to face North this year.
Affliction of the Northwest
The Tai Sui Grand Duke of Jupiter, which is the direction associated with the zodiac animal. The dog is associated with Northwest. Like the Three Sha, the Tai Sui does not like to be disturbed. However, the energy here can be either supportive or unsupportive, depending on the other energy it encounters. As with the North, this area should be kept quiet and avoid digging or construction of any kind.
Affliction of the Southeast
The affliction of the Southeast is known as Sui Po or Year Breaker. The Sui Po always sits opposite the Tai Sui Grand Duke. As with the other afflictions, it’s best to avoid construction, loud noises, clutter, and other disturbances. If disturbed, the Sui Po can cause immediate issues with health, particularly with the aged.
Sickness Star in the West
The 2 Black Star (Kun) will be residing in the direction of West this year. As with the Afflictions, it’s best to avoid construction, loud noises, clutter and other disturbances. If construction occurs in the West area of the garden or nearby, hang a 6-tube metal chime between the construction and the building to disrupt the unfavorable energy.
Other Unfavorable Energy
While there are other annual stars that bring unfavorable or unsupportive energy, the most concerning are these, which have the gravest potential.
